Design and optimise a high-performance single-cylinder Formula SAE engine numerically.
The main objective of the project was to create an efficient and adaptable engine for the highly competitive Formula SAE event. We focused on designing an engine that seamlessly integrates with the entire car while optimising its ergonomics and various design aspects, including the centre of gravity and power-to-weight ratio. This was particularly challenging given the unique design philosophy of the 2018 Formula Car, which features a fully aluminium space frame chassis and a fiber-carbon aerodynamic kit.
Began by using zero-dimensional models to optimise the stroke-to-bore ratios to achieve our goal. We then moved on to a more advanced 1D model using numerical software to improve the engine design further. Our engine had a side-mounted direct fuel injector and a supercharger to optimise its performance. Finally, we conducted a full CFD study to evaluate our design's initial and fundamental results.
Overall, the engine design was a great success, contributing to the improved performance of the entire car package.
